Renting a Car in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is the largest car rental market in the United States and arguably in the world. A car is not optional in LA -- it is essential. The city's sprawling layout, limited public transit options, and freeway-centric design make a rental car the most practical way to experience everything from Hollywood and Santa Monica to Malibu and Disneyland. All six major rental brands operate at LAX through the Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility, a massive building located near the airport that opened in 2023. The ConRAC replaced the previous scattered rental lots and provides a modern, efficient rental experience with direct shuttle bus connections from all LAX terminals. Shuttle buses run every few minutes, and the journey from terminal to ConRAC takes approximately 10-15 minutes.
The LAX ConRAC Experience
The LAX ConRAC facility consolidates all major rental brands in a single building. After arriving at LAX, follow signs to the rental car shuttle bus pickup area (Ground Level, outside arrivals). Free shuttle buses marked 'Rental Car' run continuously to the ConRAC. Inside the ConRAC, rental counters are organized by brand on the main level. Loyalty program members with express service (Hertz Gold Plus, Avis Preferred, Enterprise Plus) can bypass the main counter and proceed directly to their assigned vehicles on the parking levels above. During peak periods (Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, holiday weekends), counter wait times can reach 30-60 minutes for non-loyalty members. Express service through a loyalty program membership is strongly recommended for LAX, even if you register only for this single rental. At return, follow signs back to the ConRAC, where return lanes are clearly marked by brand. After dropping off the vehicle, shuttle buses return you to the terminal within 10-15 minutes.
Driving in Los Angeles
LA's freeway system is the lifeline of the city. Key routes include the I-405 (San Diego Freeway), I-10 (Santa Monica Freeway), I-110 (Harbor Freeway), US-101 (Hollywood Freeway), and the I-5 (Golden State/Santa Ana Freeway). Traffic congestion is a defining feature of LA driving. Morning rush (6:30-9:30 AM) and evening rush (3:30-7:30 PM) can double or triple normal journey times. Navigation apps with real-time traffic are essential. ExpressLanes (toll lanes) on the I-10 and I-110 allow single-occupancy vehicles to use HOV lanes by paying a variable toll via FasTrak transponder. Some rental companies offer FasTrak transponders; confirm availability and fees at pickup. Alternatively, avoid ExpressLanes or ensure you have a HOV-eligible number of passengers. Speed limits on LA freeways are typically 65 mph, with some sections posted at 55 mph. Radar enforcement is less common than in Europe, but California Highway Patrol officers actively patrol freeway routes. Parking in LA is generally easier than in dense European cities. Most attractions, malls, and restaurants offer free or validated parking. Street parking in popular neighborhoods (Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice) can be challenging and requires careful attention to posted signs to avoid tickets.
California Insurance Considerations
Insurance for US car rental works differently than in Europe. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and theft protection are NOT included in the base rate in the United States. The rental company will offer CDW at approximately USD 15-30 per day, which can nearly double the daily cost of an economy rental. Before purchasing CDW from the rental company, check three alternative sources. First, your personal auto insurance policy may extend to rental vehicles (contact your insurer before traveling). Second, many premium credit cards (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, Capital One Venture) include rental car coverage as a card benefit when you pay for the rental with that card. Third, your travel insurance policy may include rental vehicle damage coverage. California requires all drivers to carry minimum liability insurance. This is typically NOT included in the rental rate. Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) from the rental company costs approximately USD 12-18 per day. Your personal auto insurance may provide sufficient liability coverage for rentals, or your credit card may offer secondary coverage. Verify before you arrive.
Practical Tips for LA Rentals
Join a free loyalty program before arriving -- the express service at LAX ConRAC saves significant time. Even first-time members benefit from counter bypass at most brands. An International Driving Permit is not required in California for visitors with valid foreign licenses in English. Licenses not in the Roman alphabet should be accompanied by an IDP or official translation. Choose a midsize vehicle or larger for freeway driving comfort. LA freeways involve significant daily mileage, and a cramped economy car becomes tiring quickly. Most LA rental rates include unlimited mileage, but confirm this at booking. Refuel before returning to LAX. Gas stations near the airport charge premium prices. Stations along Lincoln Boulevard, Sepulveda Boulevard, or Century Boulevard offer better rates. Full-to-full fuel policy is standard. Consider whether you actually need a car for your entire visit. If you are staying in walkable areas like Santa Monica or Downtown LA, you may only need a car for specific day trips. Renting for just the days you need it can save money and eliminate parking concerns.
