Our Review Methodology
Transparency in how we evaluate, rate, and review car rental companies.
How We Rate Rental Companies
PriceCompareCar evaluates each car rental brand across five weighted categories to produce an overall expert rating on a 5-point scale. Our ratings are based on comprehensive analysis that considers fleet data, pricing research, location network analysis, loyalty program evaluation, and customer experience assessment. We do not use user-submitted reviews as a rating input. Our ratings represent independent expert assessment based on structured evaluation criteria. This approach ensures consistency, avoids manipulation, and provides a reliable basis for comparison across brands.
Our Five Rating Categories
Fleet Quality
25%Vehicle age, condition, brand diversity, category availability, electric vehicle options, and specialty vehicle access. We evaluate how new the fleet is, what brands and models are commonly available, and whether the overall driving experience reflects proper maintenance and modern features.
Value for Money
25%Base rate competitiveness, inclusion transparency, hidden fee prevalence, insurance cost structure, and overall cost-to-quality ratio. We assess whether the total rental cost -- including all fees, insurance, and extras -- delivers fair value for the experience provided.
Location Coverage
20%Airport presence, city and neighborhood locations, geographic breadth, operating hours, and off-airport alternatives. We evaluate both the raw number of locations and the strategic usefulness of the network for different travel patterns.
Loyalty Program
15%Tier structure and thresholds, earning rates, redemption value, upgrade guarantees, fee waivers, airline and hotel partnerships, and overall program competitiveness. We assess the program's value at each tier level for different rental frequencies.
Customer Service
15%Counter experience, pickup and return efficiency, upselling practices, post-rental billing transparency, dispute resolution, digital experience quality, and overall satisfaction benchmarks. We evaluate the end-to-end service experience from booking through final bill.
Information Sources
Our reviews draw on multiple information sources to ensure comprehensive and accurate analysis. These include direct rental experience across multiple locations and vehicle categories, official company websites and published policies for pricing, terms, and program details, industry reports and fleet data from automotive and travel industry publications, customer satisfaction surveys and benchmarks from recognized research organizations, regulatory filings and corporate reports where publicly available, and comparative market research across all six brands for consistent evaluation. We cross-reference multiple sources for every factual claim in our reviews. When information conflicts between sources, we note this discrepancy and indicate which source we consider most reliable.
Update Schedule and Accuracy
All brand review pages are updated quarterly to reflect current pricing, policies, loyalty program changes, and service quality developments. Each review displays a 'Last Updated' date so readers can assess the currency of the information. Destination guides are reviewed bi-annually, with updates triggered by significant regulatory changes, new brand entries or exits, or toll system modifications between regular reviews. Educational guides are reviewed annually and updated when industry practices change. If a significant change affects a brand or destination between regular review cycles -- such as a major policy change, corporate restructuring, or pricing shift -- we update the relevant content promptly and note the mid-cycle update.
Editorial Independence and Affiliate Disclosure

This affiliate revenue supports the operation of the platform and the production of our editorial content. Our editorial process is entirely separate from our commercial relationships. No rental company can pay for a higher rating, influence the content of a review, or suppress negative findings. Our ratings, recommendations, and analysis are based solely on the evaluation criteria described above. All pages containing affiliate links include a clear disclosure statement. We believe transparency about our business model builds trust and allows readers to evaluate our recommendations with full knowledge of our financial relationships.
