About PriceCompareCar
What is PriceCompareCar?
PriceCompareCar is an independent car rental comparison platform that provides expert reviews, destination guides, and educational content for travelers. We analyze six major rental brands -- Hertz, Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Enterprise -- across fleet quality, pricing, locations, loyalty programs, and customer service. We are not a booking platform or price aggregator.
How does PriceCompareCar make money?
PriceCompareCar earns commission from qualifying bookings made through affiliate links in our content. When you click a 'Check Prices' link and complete a rental booking, we earn a referral fee. This revenue supports the production of our editorial content. Our affiliate relationships never influence our ratings, reviews, or recommendations.
Are your reviews truly independent?
Yes. PriceCompareCar is not owned by or affiliated with any rental company, aggregator, or booking platform. No rental company can pay for a higher rating or influence our editorial content. Our reviews include genuine strengths and weaknesses for every brand, based on our structured evaluation methodology.
How often are reviews updated?
Brand reviews are updated quarterly. Destination guides are reviewed bi-annually. Educational guides are reviewed annually. All pages display a 'Last Updated' date. Significant changes between regular review cycles trigger immediate updates.
Can I book a rental car through PriceCompareCar?
PriceCompareCar does not process bookings directly. Our 'Check Prices' links take you to the rental company's own website, where you complete the booking directly with the brand. This ensures you receive the brand's standard terms, protections, and loyalty program credit.
Which car rental brands do you cover?
We provide comprehensive reviews of six major international car rental brands: Hertz, Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Enterprise. These six brands represent the vast majority of the global car rental market and are available at most major airports worldwide.
Using the Platform
How should I use PriceCompareCar to plan my rental?
Start with the destination guide for your specific location to understand brand availability, local driving conditions, and insurance requirements. Then read the brand reviews for the companies available at your destination. Finally, check our educational guides for topics like insurance, fees, and money-saving strategies. This approach ensures you book with full knowledge of your options.
How do your brand ratings work?
Each brand is rated on a 5-point scale based on five weighted categories: fleet quality (25%), value for money (25%), location coverage (20%), loyalty program (15%), and customer service (15%). Ratings are determined by expert analysis, not user submissions. Full details are available on our Review Methodology page.
Do you recommend one brand over others?
We do not recommend a single 'best' brand because the right choice depends on your priorities. If fleet quality matters most, Sixt leads. If customer service is your priority, Enterprise excels. If global coverage matters, Hertz has the widest network. Our reviews help you identify which brand matches your specific needs.
Will you add more destinations?
Yes. We regularly expand our destination coverage. If you would like to suggest a destination for future coverage, please contact us through our Contact page.
General Car Rental Questions
Do I need insurance from the rental company?
In Europe, basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and theft protection are included in the rental rate. In the United States, CDW is optional and costs approximately USD 15-30 per day. Before purchasing additional insurance at the counter, check your personal auto insurance, credit card benefits, and travel insurance for existing rental car coverage. Our Car Rental Insurance Explained guide provides comprehensive coverage advice.
What is the excess (deductible) and why does it matter?
The excess is the maximum amount you pay per damage incident under CDW coverage. If your rental car is damaged and repair costs are EUR 3,000, and your excess is EUR 1,200, you pay EUR 1,200 and the rental company covers the rest. Excess amounts vary by brand and vehicle category, typically ranging from EUR 600 to EUR 2,500. Third-party excess insurance can reimburse this cost at a fraction of the rental company's excess reduction product price.
What documents do I need to rent a car?
You need a valid driver's license (held for at least one year), a credit card in the primary driver's name, your booking confirmation, and a passport for international rentals. Some countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) for non-EU license holders. Check our destination guides for country-specific requirements.
How old do I need to be to rent a car?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Drivers aged 21-24 typically pay a young driver surcharge of EUR 10-30 or USD 10-30 per day. Some premium vehicle categories require a minimum age of 25. Age requirements and surcharges vary by brand, location, and vehicle category.
What is the difference between automatic and manual transmission rental cars?
In North America, automatic transmission is standard and included at no extra cost. In Europe, manual transmission is the default for economy and compact categories. Automatic vehicles are available in Europe but cost EUR 5-15 more per day and must be specifically requested at booking. Always confirm that automatic is guaranteed in your reservation, not listed as a preference.
What happens if I return the car late?
Most companies offer a grace period of 29-59 minutes. Beyond this, you are typically charged for an additional full day at the daily or walk-in rate. If you know you will be late, contact the rental company to extend the rental, which usually provides a better rate than the overstay charge.
Can I drive the rental car to another country?
Cross-border travel is possible with most major brands in Europe but must be declared at booking. Fees may apply, and some countries (particularly Eastern European nations) may be restricted or carry additional charges. Always inform the rental company of your cross-border plans before picking up the vehicle. Undeclared cross-border travel voids your insurance.
What fuel policy should I choose?
Full-to-full is the most economical option for most renters. You receive a full tank and return it full, paying only retail pump prices for fuel consumed. Prepaid fuel is convenient but wasteful unless you return nearly empty. Fuel service charges from the rental company are the most expensive option and should be avoided.
Destination-Specific Questions
Do I need a rental car in London?
A rental car is generally not recommended for central London due to heavy traffic, the Congestion Charge (GBP 15 per day), ULEZ fees, and expensive parking. However, a rental car is excellent for exploring the broader UK -- the countryside, coastal areas, and cities outside London. Many travelers rent from Heathrow specifically for travel beyond the capital.
Is it safe to drive in Italy?
Driving in Italy is safe but challenging. Italian drivers are assertive, and traffic in cities like Rome and Naples can be intense. The biggest risk for rental drivers is ZTL (restricted traffic zone) fines from entering historic city centers. Park outside city centers and use public transport for urban exploration. Our Rome Fiumicino Guide covers Italian driving in detail.
Do I need a 4x4 in Iceland?
For summer travel on the Ring Road and Golden Circle, a standard 2WD car is sufficient. A 4x4 is required for any F-road driving and strongly recommended for winter travel. SAAP (sand and ash protection) insurance is essential regardless of vehicle type. Our Reykjavik Guide provides complete Iceland rental advice.
What toll system does Portugal use?
Portugal uses both traditional toll booths and SCUT electronic-only tolls that have no booths. For SCUT roads, you must set up Via Verde or another electronic payment method through your rental company. Without a payment method, toll charges accumulate with substantial administrative fees. Our Lisbon Guide explains the system in detail.
Can I drive after drinking alcohol in Dubai?
No. The UAE enforces a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and driving. Any detectable level of alcohol means you should not drive. Penalties include imprisonment, heavy fines, and deportation. This applies to all drivers, including tourists.
What is the LAX ConRAC?
The LAX Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility is a centralized rental car building near Los Angeles International Airport that houses all major rental brands. Free shuttle buses connect the ConRAC to all LAX terminals. The ConRAC replaced scattered rental lots and provides a modern, efficient pickup and return experience. Our Los Angeles Guide covers the ConRAC process.
